Hello there! We’re happy you’re interested to join us. We’re currently looking for a full time Big Data Systems Administrator at Improve Digital.

At improve digital we face challenging infrastructure, complexity and scalability issues on a daily basis. Our real-time adserving platform satisfies billions of requests per day that results in PBs of Hadoop, Redshift and MySQL storage. We are looking for a Big Data Systems Administrator to join our growing Engineering team, based either in our Amsterdam HQ or remotely.

Just having large volumes of data isn’t an end in itself, we have to ensure that we have the systems in place that make the data available where and when it is needed and in the right format. In this role you will work with the Data Engineers to continue our record of excellent system uptime, availability and reliability. But you won’t just be reactive, you will be expected to take ownership of the systems health and actively identify and implement improvement initiatives.

The Engineering team is multi-disciplinary and you will be working closely with Data Scientist, Data Engineer, Database Administrator and Software Development Engineer  colleagues so eagerness to learn is essential.

This is an excellent opportunity for the right candidate to acquire skills and experience through hands-on implementation, research and conference attendance in a range of technologies and use this to have a real impact on the business.

Responsibilities

  • Maintenance of our Hadoop and Kafka clusters
  • Reactive corrective activities as well as preventative maintenance and systems improvement
  • Continuous improvement of our systems monitoring, alerting and security capabilities
  • Working closely with Data Engineers and Software Development Engineers to ensure applications use the clusters optimally
  • Contribute to the definition of the company’s broader data strategy and architecture
  • Help define and perform proof of concept and implementation of new data architectures and tools

Desired skills & Experience

  • Experience with Hadoop, Kafka or other big data infrastructure systems or a demonstrated capacity to learn
  • Experience in systems maintenance with a strong focus on reliability and performance
  • Any experience dealing with large data volumes is a plus
  • Major bonus points for experience with or interest in areas such as machine learning, functional programming and data visualization
  • Good familiarity with Linux (we use mostly CentOS)
  • Experience working in an agile environment (particularly with Scrum or TDD) is highly desirable
  • Understanding of the online advertising technology landscape is useful but not essential

We look for bright, passionate, motivated people who are able to fit in with our relaxed but business minded office environment. This role is pivotal in ensuring a smooth running of the business. If this sounds like you, we would love to hear from you so please get in touch.
